Functions 06: Parent Functions and Transformations

Welcome to MathforAll!

In this video, we are going to learn three parent functions and how to translate them.

  • We introduce the three parent functions, y=x, y=x2, and y= the absolute value of x.
  • We show how a number outside the grouping symbols of x, known as ‘k’, translate the function vertically
  • We show how a number inside the grouping symbols of x, known a ‘h’, translate the function horizontally, but ‘opposite’ the way the sign shows.
